What is my favourite drink? Well this is something that better be seen in the light of my growing old (note this is not growing up). First stage somewhere around my 15th year of life - I got addicted to coffee. Well it was mostly because of Aunt - makes lovely coffee and it started all the trouble. However I was strong enough to get out of this addiction. Second stage around my 18th year of life. Around this time I got like Coke. This was the time when I was just getting in the IIIT (http://www.iiit.net) and that was the time that I first understood what freedom was. Ofcourse I later realised how bad it was, but that would be a different story. However I did not like the fact that coke had too much of junk in it. Consider this, Coke is marketed as something that is cool. How about the side affects - caffeine in coke? You can see the information printed in fine letters on the top. Besides that it had that Ph value corrodes the teeth. Well bye bye to coke. Enough said. Third stage around my 23rd birthday. Hmm this is interesting. I like alcohol. Well not exactly any alcohol. It took me a while to realize exactly what kind of alcohol I like. Now dont get me wrong but I dont go around boozing and so on. I drink but at most one peg. I did try to get drunk but it didnt work out. I did not like that feeling. I had my first drink with the late Geetesh, Bermuda XXX rum. Well is kinda odd taste but it felt ok. However I would have ONLY a teaspoon. As Aditya better known as Mama, would always call - a teaspoon of coughsyrup. Well that was fine. Then the next thing I had was Old Monk Rum. This was terrible in taste. So I struck it off my record. I soon realised that it was just a matter of time before I get used to this odd taste. I also realised that I was more inclined to the smell of the alcohol and then the taste. I was NOT interested in getting drunk. Now this was what made many things easier for me. From what I know of alcohol, it is the alcoholic that hurts everyone, not the alcohol itself. Yes it is true that alcohol is what creates the problem of alcoholism. Thus I was confortable with the idea of having alcohol. Now I wanted to test my resolve just to be sure enough that I would NEVER get addicted to alcohol. I promised myself that I would NEVER have the same brand of alcohol twice. That is by now I should NEVER touch Bermuda or Old Monk. That was actually the easier part. Thus I entered my current phase, I have alcohol - VERY costly alcohol indeed. The next drink I tasted was wine Port Wine No.7. Well I like it - it was decent but somehow it was not good for me. Struck it out too as a bad thing to taste. Now was the interesting part I had vodka some terrible brand called the Alcatraz. Terrible Terrible Terrible... Terrible. Horrible taste. It was the worst thing I ever tasted. I also came to know that vodka by itself does not taste good. So all vodkas out. Around this time I tasted whisky for the first time. Boy am I in love with it. I had a short stint with Brandy but it was somehow not catchy. Whisky on the other hand has great taste and smells great too. I got started with the whiskies. Did lots of research on the internet and came across many articles that would describe the exact methods of making whiskies etc; Oh well that was great. Then one day someone told me that it is not safe to have the alcohol in a neat form. Well till date I had it always neat (other than the wine). So I tried whisky (dont remember the brand) with Pepsi. I spit it out immediately and that was the end of it. I realised that any adultration with whisky is the worst crime against whisky "rofl". So from that day onwards I have whisky that too neat. I also realised something else around this time. I liked to have my drinks whie or after a meal. The best whisky I ever had was Signature. Enter Scotch exit normal whiskies: The first scotch I ever had was Black && White. Since that day I have only liked Scotch. There are other whiskies but they are not of this quality. Oh by the way I just wanted to point out that Scotch is a kind of whisky. However a whisky qualifies to be branded a scotch ONLY if it has been distilled in Scotland. Yeah the packaging and bottling could be done anywhere. There was one good thing I realised - scotch clears up a sore throat faster than anything else. I had a really bad throat and Scotch cleared it up in just 5 minutes. Then there was Teacher's the best scotch I had till date. Man it rocks. Smooth and great taste. Nothing to write about this. I am still waiting to have something called Black Label. Hmm heard this is one of the best around. Oh well what's the problem - I will buy it and surely have it. My interest in these drinks has brought me to a weird stage in life. I spend a lot on the scotch. Sometimes as much as 600 INR. Now this is weird but it constitutes the second highest luxury expense I incur every month. The first is my ever growing collection of old movie CDs that I buy every month from Planet M (TM). Well as of now I am not even getting the scotch I want, remember I dont drink the same brand twice? I have a few of drinks on my hit list. Soem fine Japanese Whisky, Black Label, Shivas Regal and Blue Label. I have not tasted any single malts till date, but I am sure that they will be better than anything I have ever tasted in whiskies. Hmm since I have talked about the best of the whiskies let me talk about the worst among them. First up Royal Stag. I ordered a peg and I gave it back after just touching the whisky with my toungue aka tasting. Imagine a glass of pins presented to you with ice cubes. That is what it tasted like. In second place Imperial Blue. I wonder what made them think this is good. Well forall that I know - it is lying next to me and I use it as nothing more than clearing up my throat. Sixty bucks for a cough syrup that tastes worst than the best cough syrup. Next up Blender's Pride. Weird taste, but good looking bottle. Now for that one special life time award. Mix the best of the whiskies out there with ANYTHING - I mean ANYTHING and you have an abomination in the glass. I had whisky with cola, sode, ice and also water. They kill the taste. Above all of this - getting drunk by drinking whisky is the worst thing that I could ever think of. I am sure there are other people who would say that the point of drinking alcohol is to get drunk, well that is the way you would think about alcohol. Not me. Please understand - I am NOT writing this to advertise alcohol, as always alcohol is injurious to health. It has not been proved otherwise till date. Avoid messing around with something that one cannot control. I avoid narcotics. My finishing words, whatever the drink I might be going to start, there is one drink that will never go down to the second place. Plain glass of water - with adultration using ice, lemon juice etc; Just plain water anytime. Well that is it as of now. Update as of 05-10-2004 Chivas Regal rocks man! VERY nice scotch... though it costed 750 INR for just 60ml of the drink :)). I am waiting for all the other guyz to come over to Mordor. There is a fest about to start and will continue for the rest of my stay @ Milestone :D Update as of 11-05-2005 Stopped having any drinks, basically nothing alcoholic interests me anymore. Still looking for that illusive Single Malt.
