Let there be war. A cola war. We have heard of the 'war on terror' which I believe, is completely fabricated. Just to ensure that the people who are in power as of now, stay in power. Then we also heard of the cola war. On similar lines Coca cola and Pepsi have been fighting each other over market share. I am sure that the 'war on terror has been strongly influenced by the cola wars. Allow only two parties, keep fighting but ensure that there is a status quo on the market share. Unwanted parties: The minute a third party enters, its time to join forces against that party. Let me explain using an example. Did you ever observe a pack of stray dogs? On the roads these dogs snarl at the other members of the pack over food and domination. However the minute they see a new dog in the area the whole pack unites and collectively launch an attack on this invader. This is what is happening, as of now, with Coca cola and Pepsi joining forces against CSE. CSE is simply someone who is not allowed in their turf. CSE is a threat to both of these giants because what CSE is doing, is digging up the carcasses that the colas have been burying quietly in their quest for better profits and better salaries for their CEOs. Take ownership: When I hear of and see reports that these cola bottles had fungus, insects and even condoms in their bottles it makes me furious. We pay 10 INR for a 300 ml bottle much above what we pay for that water that we get in those pipes from the govt, and we are treated like this? Govt on their part will never speak about these companies. Afterall these companies will threaten to take their investments away. So exactly what is the govt for? Their investments might just be in a pesticide plant and whatever be the sludge that those plants produce, the companies could pass it off as the 'Diet' version of their products. More scary is the fact that they hold a dual monopoly, and frankly there is NO incentive for them to even reduce the prices. When certain reports come up with contaminated bottles, these companies just shrug it off saying its spurious product. So exactly HOW are we supposed to fix that? Are we supposed to police for your products? You make such huge profits on these products, why not just invest in better processes to thwart these problems? I dont even see a hologram on these bottles? I might be wrong in that suggestion but hey, its their job to find the solutions? This is what I mean when I say there is no incentive to invest in improving their products. Enviromental impact. So what is the environmental impact of all this? Remember Union Carbide and the Bhopal gas tragedy? A high ranking official from UC was in India when this incident occured. Ofcourse he went scot-free and years later they sued the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy for 'disrupting their work'. Back then no one cared, least of all our govt. UC is back as Dow Chemicals btw. This high ranking official is still smoking cigars on his expensive yatch while the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy are suffering from resperatory problems. UC disowned any responsibility for the tragedy. Now enter the cola giants. Did you know that a village in Kerala has been sucked dry of its ground water due to a Coca cola factory? So exactly who is to blame for this fiasco? First the company, second the govt. Does it matter to Coke? No. Definitely not. All they need to do is dismantle the factory and ship it off to another village and keep shifting villages till there are profits in India. It doesnt matter to them if the people of this village have to walk tens of kilometres to get their water after the company comes into their village. Stock prices are more important than people's lives. What are you doing as a consumer? Hah. Now that is a hard question to ask but even harder to answer. Can these cola companies behave like this IF only you took the responsibility? Yes I am saying its the consumers' fault that these companies behave like this. India is a large market and there is no way that these giants will give it up. Demand the value for EVERY single paisa you spend on these bottles. It takes these guys what, 2 INR to make one bottle. The rest is just profit. Ensure that you spread the knowledge. These beasts will not listen to weaklings. A consumer HAS to be in control. Its just like the dogs, if you are not in control of your dog, you have a dog that is annoying at best and life threatening at worst.
